Requirements: must be original, a work of authorship, and fixed in a tangible medium
Types of works covered: Books, charts, maps-1790, Music-1831, photo’s-1865, Paintings, drawings, models-1870, movies-1912, sound recordings-1971, computer programs-1980, architectural works-1990
Do not need to file an application to have a copyright
Established as soon as it is rendered in tangible form (can be digital)
Duration: life of author+70yrs or for company, 95 years from publication or 120 yrs from creation
Fair use exemption, typically for private study, scholarship or research (copier can’t profit by it)
